My name is Guy Avern and I am a qualified music teacher with over 20 years experience in teaching music to all ages. I hold an MMus in composition, a BA (Hons) in music and a PGCE with QTLS status.
For over 20 years I have been teaching Music and Music Technology in FE colleges, Sixth forms, secondary schools and independently to a wide variety of learners. I have taught complete beginners, pre-GCSE and all levels up to degree level. I have lots of experience in teaching young children, teenagers and adults and love teaching to all ages and abilities. I can cover every style of western classical music as well as many different styles within western pop music; from blues and jazz to hip-hop and heavy metal, from folk to funk and dance to disco. I am passionate about music and enjoy teaching it to others immensely.
I play the piano, keyboard and bass guitar and have a proven record of performances across the UK as well as a number of recordings and broadcasts. I am currently active as a composer, first and foremost, but am also very active as a performer.
I can also help you with extra tuition for GCSE or AS and A-Level music and music technology; having had experience teaching these levels.
All lessons will be tailored to your individual needs and suited to your musical needs and goals. I can enter students for ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall or Rock School exam grades and have a 100% pass rate.
I am based in Peterborough but since COVID and the experience of online teaching I now offer online lessons.
Since being in Peterborough I have been a classroom teacher at Sir Harry Smith Community College and a teacher at Breve Music in Peterborough, teaching small classes, children and adults.
I now teach at the PCYM in Peterborough, a place where young musicians are given 1:1 tuition alongside musicianship and ensemble tuition. This is in association with the Guildhall School of Music in London.
Through JMP Music I have also worked in various Primary Schools as a Peripatetic piano and ukulele teacher teaching year 1 through to yr 6. I am also working as a music PPA teacher in a primary school in Cambridge.
From 2013 through to 2022 I was teaching piano at Mossbourne Community Academy, Hackney. This secondary school is currently in the top 1% of schools in the UK and to quote from the website ‘OFSTED describes Mossbourne as “outstanding, but even within that category it is exceptional.”
Mossbourne’s academy specialism is music and I am very proud to have played a part in raising the attainment of students within music and have had the pleasure of being able to teach some very talented students. Many go on to take the ABRSM and Trinity exams and I have entered several students ranging from Grade 1 up to Grade 8.
